Finding a stylish rain coat that also does it’s job and is comfortable to wear is not easy. While I’m super happy with my bright turquoise 3-in-1 waterproof when I’m cycling through Glasgow or hiking in the Highlands, it is not necessarily the most stylish jacket to travel with. For my recent trip ti the Faroe Islands I knew I had to get something a little bit different.
In Scandinavia you will inevitably meet a bunch of beautiful people who all just seem to know how to make even the most functional outfit look amazing. My new stylish rain coat had to fit right in with that – I wanted to find something really special.
And then it happened – I stumbled across an outdoor brand on Instagram that seemed to specialise in fashionable but functional clothes, with a whole range of beautiful jackets in a variety of colour: Craghoppers. Quickly I had set my mind on a dream in yellow – the Sofia GORE-TEX Paclite Jacket.

And I have hardly taken it off ever since it arrived in the mail soon after – if that doesn’t say everything about the Scottish summer… Anyways, the Sofia was my go-to outerwear on my trip to the Faroe Islands, but also for my city trips to London, York and Edinburgh with Safestay Hostels, and in fact I mostly wear it in Glasgow now as well. Here are 5 reasons why I love it.
1. It’s pretty & looks great on photos
I admit it, looks was essentially my number one priority in finding a waterproof jacket for my trip to the Faroe Islands. Scandinavians are so effortlessly cool and chic that I wanted a stylish rain coat to blend in. And ever since I have been wearing the Sofia jacket I haven’t ceased to receive compliments for it!
My choice of colour was pretty calculated as well – the Sofia jacket is also available in navy blue and parka green, but I knew yellow would look particularly good against the green hills of the Atlantic north, even if the weather wasn’t holding up. And I was right.
Finally I have a jacket that captures my adventurous spirit without making me look like my mum dressed me for it.
2. It’s lightweight and packable
The Sofia jacket weighs hardly anything and packs down into the tiniest free space of my backpack. When you travel with as much camera gear as me, you know that a bulky rain coat won’t come in handy – especially when you also want to fit a packed lunch and a jumper for the windy peaks. PLUS: The jacket comes with a little yellow pouch to protect the jacket inside your bag.

Seeing that it’s so light-weight it is particularly great for summer travel, when you wear a waterproof to keep you dry rather than warm. It’s the ideal jacket to wear in the stuffy Glaswegian summer weather or while walking up a hill in the drizzling rain.
3. GORE-TEX material is reliably waterproof
The Sofia is a jacket for summer showers really – not heavy winter conditions, but light and quick showers. The material though is of top quality – who could say no to GORE-TEX?
We were pretty lucky throughout our trip to the Faroe Islands, so I didn’t get to test the jacket in really heavy rain. But let’s just say, Glasgow gets it fair share of rain as well, and so far the jacket has held up when the cats and dogs came down on my way to and from work.
4. The shape
I particularly like that the stylish rain coat is longer than your average jacket and covers your bum as well – that way the rain can basically not come in from below. (I feel like this is a hidden review of Glaswegian weather…)
There is a waistband to tie the jacket a bit tighter if you want to go for a more fashionable look, but you can also loosen it and fit in an additional layer of knitwear if need be.
5. Great features
Finally, I was super happy with the features of the jacket, particularly the pockets and the elastic wrist bands.
The wrist bands make it a very comfortable jacket to cycle in, or to handle something – like a phone or driving a car. No dripping sleeves touching your hands!
The pockets are big enough for a large mobile phone – which always makes my blogger heart skip a beat. There is also an inside phone pocket though that also fits large smart phones.
However there is always room for improvement, and I thought of a few things that would make this jacket even better:
– A covered zipper: While the jacket was great in the rain that I did experience with it so far, I would be a little worried if I was surprised by really heavy rain. Would the jacket hold, or would the water start leaking through the zipper?
– An adjustable hood: Rain is often accompanied by wind, at least where I live, so it would be great to be able to adjust the hood in multiple ways so it would sit tighter on my head.
Would I recommend this jacket?
If you’re looking for a stylish rain coat that keeps you dry in summer hikes and looking effortlessly cool during city trips or music festivals, the Sofia GORE-TEX jacket is a great purchase. I’ve been certainly enjoying rainy weather a bit more since I’ve got it, and also love the compliments I get.
The yellow fabric might stain quite easily, but the jacket is actually machine washable! The GORE-TEX tag even says washing could improve the waterproof layer, but certainly not harm it.
