Candles that smell like Scotland

Inspired by her travels around Scotland, travel blogger Kay aka The Chaotic Scot has launched a series of scented candles that smell just like Scotland.

There are four scents inspired by the seasons – Springtime in Edinburgh (cherry blossom), Summer in the Outer Hebrides (sea salt + coconut), Autumn in Perthshire (burns orange) and Winter in the Highlands (whisky + honey) – and a few extra special editions like cranachan and clootie dumpling scented candles.

My top choice though is the festive ‘Coorie In’ orange & cranberry-scented candle for a cosy night in.

The candles are 100% natural soy wax and hand-poured in the Outer Hebrides by Sandwick Bay Candles. Shop here.

A Scotland JigsawPuzzle

One positive thing to come out of the pandemic lockdowns is that jigsaw puzzles have had a massive comeback. I couldn’t write a Scotland gift guide without at least one jigsaw on it!

The Jigsaw of Scotland comes with a picture atlas explaining some of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks, attractions and wildlife.

Artisan Soaps by Made in the Glen

I recently came across the sustainable brand Made in the Glen from Inverness. Among others, they produce the most delicious artisan soaps and shampoo bars

My favourite: the exfoliating soap bar which smells of sweet orange and cinnamon leaf.

Unlike so many other sustainable soap brands, their soaps are not wrapped in plastic, but available in zero-waste packaging.

Did you know you can become a Scottish Lord or Lady?

Highland Titles allows you to buy a small plot of land within one of their five nature reserves across the Highlands. These include the Highland Titles Nature Reserve at Duror near Glencoe, the Kilnaish Estate on the Kintyre peninsula and Glen Nant in Argyll.

The owner of each plot is given a ceremonial title – Lord or Lady of Glencoe. But not just that – the financial contribution is also used for conservation projects in the area including a Scottish wildcat breeding project and reforestation work with native tree species.

Decor and Art from Scotland

Apart from my own photo prints which are available framed and unframed, or as wall art on canvas, wood and metal, why not look into giving some Scottish artworks?

My favourite place to buy Scottish home decor is Etsy. You won’t believe how many Scottish artists sell their beautiful designs there!

Here are some of my favourites:

  • Home Decor from East End Press

Glasgow-based artist Ellie from East End Press screen prints her beautiful nature-inspired designs onto any material she can get her hands on: pillowcases, throws, tablecloths, wall decoration, mugs, posters, coin purses – you name it! I love her art prints, but also the Christmas baubles and other home decor ideas. Scottish Jewellery

Jewellery is a classic Christmas present for a special person in your life, and you will find many jewellery makers in Scotland! Here are some of my favourites:

  • In the Heather

In the Heather uses real Scottish flowers, foraged all over the country, to create beautiful and elegant resin jewellery. I have a pair of earrings containing Scottish moss (discontinued), but my top choice for a Scottish Christmas gift would be jewellery made with foraged heather.

  • Emma Wylie Jewellery

I had the pleasure of meeting Emma Wylie during the snorkelling artist residency at the Argyll Hope Spot. She’s an Edinburgh-based jewellery designer who draws a lot of inspiration from the sea. I particularly love her rings that are inspired by colonies of barnacles.

  • Red Houss Shetland

Mike Finnie from Red Houss Shetland is a Shetland-based architect, painter and jewellery maker. When I visited Shetland I did a jewellery workshop with him and fell in love with his designs which he makes from silver, pottery and sea glass from local beaches and Fair Isle designs! Shop here.

  • Bonnie Bling

Glasgow-based Mhairi Mackenzie aka. Bonnie Bling turns Scottish and Glaswegian slang into jewellery. My favourites are the necklaces, but her Nasty Woman pins are pretty awesome too. Shop here
